At Firehouse, we take our work seriously but don’t take ourselves too seriously!
We hire the brightest, most caring, experienced veterinary professionals who truly love animals and understand the human-pet bond.
What makes us different?
- We have fun together each day!
- We call our team “a team” because we work hard to act like one.
- We know you have a life and strive for a work-life balance. And we know this helps you feel refreshed when you walk through our doors each morning.
What else?
We prioritize training in leadership, communication, and diversity to help us work together as a unit:
- The Hospital Manager and Medical Director lead the team to foster good relationships and mentor individuals.
- We embrace an open-door policy. Quarterly check-ins help us assess if each person’s needs are being met.
- Each team member is encouraged to achieve their personal goals in education, career progression, and/or leadership.
Is there more? You bet!
- Everyone loves our twice-yearly company parties: our summer family party in June and our team-only holiday party in December.
- Our team chooses which philanthropic activities we pursue, so there’s a personal connection to giving back to our pet nonprofits.
- We onboard our new team members into the Firehouse culture during 60 days of training to teach our style, expectations, and methodologies.
- We support our team in continuing their veterinary education: our doctors attend conferences, and our hospital managers attend annual leadership and communication seminars. Vet Techs and Client Service Coordinators receive support that syncs with their personal needs and goals.
- We’re focused on developing leaders within our organization. We love to promote from within.
We value JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, inclusion)
We want every team member to feel like they’re part of a bigger mission, to feel empowered to carry out important tasks, to develop their own skills, and to achieve their own goals.
Our favorite little thing at Firehouse is…
“I’ve never been in an environment that’s so empowering & uplifting.”
– Ed, Firehouse Round Rock
At Firehouse, we’re like family: we truly care about each other personally and professionally.

Veterinary Externship
The Why
At Firehouse, we believe in the value of teaching and learning. Hosting veterinary students who are eager to learn allows us to contribute to our profession and is also a great way to keep our own knowledge and skills fresh and sharp.
The Who
We are Firehouse Animal Health Center, a group of full-service small animal general practices offering high-quality medicine and exceptional client service. We LOVE to talk about what sets us apart but hate to waste paper, so explore our site to learn more about us. Be sure to check out our “100 Little Things”!
You are a veterinary student (currently enrolled at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school) who wants to gain experience in a high-quality small animal practice, has a positive outlook and loves connecting with clients (even if it still makes you nervous), and is ready to jump in and grab opportunities to learn as they come your way. Our externship program is open to vet students in any year.
The What
Our Veterinary Externship Program relies on student-driven learning to improve your clinical skills and, for those who are interested, your business acumen as well. In addition to shadowing our doctors during appointments and assisting with surgeries, we may ask you to research a medical topic and present to our team or join us at a community event to connect with new clients.
We want to help prepare you to be a happy, productive practitioner of veterinary medicine and an important member of your community.
The Where, When, and How
Austin, Texas! We currently have seven hospitals in the Austin area. You will spend most of your time at one hospital but will have the opportunity to visit the rest because each of our medical teams has something unique to offer.
We host externs year-round, typically for 2 weeks per student. Let us know if your school requires a longer duration. We can be flexible. Please contact us at least 60 days prior to your externship start date, and the sooner, the better.
We offer a $600/week stipend after a successful completion of the externship.
We have limited space for extern housing at our pet resort locations.
